Researchers from the University of Southampton, UK, have found that honey diluted with water can be used against urine infection in patients with catheters. It was found that diluted honey stops bacteria from forming sticky, hard-to-remove layers on surfaces such as plastic, and hence can be used to flush urinary catheters to keep them clean. The researchers used Manuka honey, which is found in Australia and New Zealand, and is known to have bacteria-fighting properties. They also found that even a low dilution of about 3.3 per cent can stop bacteria from clustering together and creating layers of bio-film. The study was published in Journal of Clinical Pathology.
